In my local paper, a retired politician was complaining that the second amendment was actually a “straw man” and had nothing to do with the state’s need for or right to impose gun control. I’m hearing this a lot from liberal talking heads – the Constitution is just a historic document to them.
Conservatives, of course, see the Constitution as a compact between citizens, a hard limit on what the government can do. I guess as long as the Constitution does matter, we’ll be arguing about what it means. So for the next few weeks, we’ll be posting quotes from the Federalist Papers – the closest “source documents” we have on the Founders’ intent when drafting the Constitution. Hopefully, it will smarten us all up – or at least smarten me up.
