Now this is personal.

Senator Chuck Schumer has proposed yet another maple syrup protection legislation.  Last year he passed a bill in the Senate that made it a federal felony, punishable by up to five years, to mislabel a product as maple syrup.

It isn’t Schumer’s attempt to impose an outrageous penalty on what I admit is a heinous crime – violent offenders frequently don’t get five years imprisonment.  It is the fact that he is trying to “protect” the maple syrup industry at all.  As has been shown time and again, when the government steps in to “protect” an industry, that is the death knell of said industry.  Chuck Schumer, leave my maple syrup alone.
