I almost didn’t read this story because it was predictable. Venezuela has banned the purchase of guns by its citizens. But I did read it because I hold guns close to my heart, literally and figuratively. I even like to name my weapons. But I was a little surprised when reading the BBC News’ article regarding the reasons behind the ban.
The ban is the latest attempt by the government to improve security and cut crime ahead of elections in October
Venezuela saw more than 18,000 murders last year and the capital, Caracas, is thought to be one of the most dangerous cities in Latin America.
Throughout the entire article, that is the only reason set forth of why Hugo Chavez would want to disarm the populace. The reporter could think of no other possible motive, nor find anyone who opposes such a tactic to include in the article. I just can’t think why a dictator would want a meek and easily controlled people.
Let’s hear from another dictator regarding his benevolent reasons for gun control.
“This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future.” – Adolph Hitler, 1935.
Yes, safer streets. That must be the reason.
