Memorial Day Thoughts

On Sunday my hometown had a Memorial Day parade and event in the park, and feted a squadron that had been adopted in the Vietnam days and that the city continues to support today. It was a terrific event, with current, youthful members of the squadron leading the kids in potato sack races and doing cammo face painting. Two things struck me about these young men and women. First, the people who go into the US military really are the best that America has to offer. They were so poised and strong and good. Second, I was struck by how touched they were by the event, by all the people who came up to them to shake their hands, hug them, or just thank them for their service.

I think Memorial Day is a great tradition, a time to remember those who have fallen. But let’s not waituntil Veterans Day or the next Memorial Day to thank those who are serving now or have served in the past. If you see a soldier, shake his hand, buy his lunch, or just say thanks.

I worked overseas in the aid game for longer than I'd like to admit and learned several important things: 1) Third World countries aren't poor because America is rich. They're impoverished due to socialist governments that provide neither rule of law nor basic infrastructures; 2) These socialist governments redistribute wealth from taxpayers to the government workers. There's no benefit to the poor or downtrodden, and certainly not to the general welfare in terms of infrastructure improvements. 3) America is moving toward the Third World model. Rule of law has been subverted because equality under the law is disappearing as special interests carve out exemptions to regulations and special favors under the law. The redistribution of wealth to government began decades ago -- total compensation for government employees now outpaces salaries in the private sector.
