I took most of last week off to attend a wedding in Florida (which was fabulous – both wedding and Florida). The wedding was for a fellow development consultant, and lots of our mutual friends who’d worked in Afghanistan were there, including several who’d either recently left or were still working there. They all said the same thing – the security situation has dramatically deteriorated since my time there in ’04-’06. And now that everyone knows when the Americans are pulling out, the bad guys are waiting with their knives out and the Afghans who worked with us are either trying to get out of the country or are growing long beards so they’re not killed when the Taliban retake the country. Yes, I said “when,” not “if.” I hope I’m wrong, but it seems inevitable and that really depresses me.
