Farewell food pyramid

Why do we have a Department of Agriculture? If that department were eliminated today, would there be any adverse consequences? Sure, we’d be stuck with that extremely complicated food pyramid thingy and not have the nifty new ‘My Plate’ icon telling us what to eat. But farmers would do just fine. Perhaps because the USDA recognizes its own irrelevancy when it comes to the actual production of agriculture it has branched out to projects ranging from home ownership progams to eradicating feral pigs in San Diego County. Federalism, it seems, is as dead as the food pyramid.
